Who are the French Judges. A sociological outline

The corps of judges is undergoing a complete upheaval. For the last twenty years, it has been faced with numerous challenges. Its traditional ways of recruiting have been modified by the creation of the « Ecole nationale de la Magistrature » (National Judges School) and by a significant turn to the outside. The corps has been unified and includes members of varying origins : the older and the newer appointees as well as judges repatriated from North Africa and overseas. It is thus a very composite group. It is also a very elderly group due to the integration of returnees coupled with a significant decrease in recruiting. Finally it is a group undergoing social change due to its recruiting from a prestige school. This has resulted in a rapid feminization, a more balanced division of geographical origins of the judges and a certain modification in their social origins.
