Whatever happens to ministers ? Career prospects after resignation

A biographical survey of the 257 ministers who held office under the Fifth Republic between 8 January 1959 and 17 July 1984 allows the following conclusions to be drawn regarding their professional future after resignation. Apart from a few cases of retirement or death, a minister is destined, first and foremost, to return to a ministerial post or to continue his political career by accumulating one elected office after another. One in ten return to their earlier professional activities, while a handful get top jobs in the civil service, the public sector, European institutions or private business.
