What Type of Prison for What Kind of Social Reintegration ? Reflections Based on a Few Months in Prison in France and in Mexico
Pouvoirs n°135 - La Prison - novembre 2010 - p53-67
Based on her personal experience of detention in France and in Mexico (2004/2005), Hélène Castel highlights the modes of justice enforcement that appears to be utterly contradictory with the very notion of social reintegration. In the French prisons she points to insufficient outside control, the drastic reduction of exchange between prisoners as well as with the outside world, the ban on sexuality and solidarity, the lack of collective projects in connection with civil society. The implementation of fundamental alternatives and practical proposals to overcome these deficiencies has become both urgent and necessary.
