Varieties of elite and nature of the State : the american example

After briefly recapping on the debate opposing the advocates of pluralism and those favouring elitist theories, we examine first the recent empirical studies on the american elite ail of which underline the marked influence exerted by the business world on the personnel of the political world, then we turn to studies in the sociology of the State which show the birth of strongly differentiated mini structures within the State. These latter can but limit the generalised fusion of the different elites, increase the political role of the top civil servants and reduce that of industrial power. The ties that link the differents elites to each other
depend, it now becomes apparent, on the nature of the State itself.
