This article follows a paradoxical approach : it intends to study nonevents
and to trace non-candidates. From 1967 to 2007, most presidential
elections have been characterized by the absence, in the final
run, of one or several expected candidates. The author has established a
free typology of these defections and has identified five major features
of the defecting candidates : the supernumeraries who limit themselves
to declining their identity ; the dissenters who reject the system ; the
representatives who unduly expect the presidency to be delivered to
them ; the legatees who try to inherit but do not want to conquer ;
lastly, the petulant who, in their wild-eyed fantasies, imagine that the
coveted office represent an ideal, total and perfect form of power.
