The town-hall as a career path

Due to the purely French tradition of permitting elected officials to hold more than one office, the town-hall appears, sometimes as the starting point of the classical upward path for politicians who obtain their first political experience at the local level before stepping up to Paris, sometimes as the culmination of a new type of career path of a government minister seeking democratic legitimacy ; but whatever the direction, the French politician seems to show the same deep attachment to his mayoral office. The decentralization movement will probably not change this intertwining of local and national office for a long time.
