The status of political parties in the Federal Republic of Germany

The article examines the legal status of German political parties as laid down in the Basic Law and the Law of the 24th July 1967, concerning political parties. These texts define the structures of the parties, their functions and the sources of their funds. The general aim is to fit these bodies, which are essential to the working of a modem democracy, into a legal System. However these sources raise as many problems as they solve. Nevertheless they do have the advantage of making transparent the working of the political parties in the Federal Republic of Germany.
