The pontifical monarchy and the power of the pope

A Pontifical Monarchy ? The expression fits inadequately a more complex and subtle reality. This article deals with the bases of this power, the way it is legitimized and its limits. A distinction must be drawn between a temporal power reduced nowadays to the miniature State of the Vatican , and a spiritual power, capable of being extended to the most profane questions based on a theory of religion as a « whole » and of a definition of the Church as « a perfect society ». This concept is radically opposed to any lay-oriented theory which would reduce the former to a private matter and the latter to a state apparatus.
