The article raises three questions. Firstly, was the constitution of 1946 really « imposed » or « dictated » by an occupying military power against the wishes of the Japanese people ? Secondly, does not the revisionists’ call for a « comprehensive post-war settlement » imply a questioning, in the name of « Western » defence, of the fundamental ethical value of Western civilisation which is respect for the individual ? Thirdly, what are the deeper implications of the implantation of a Western-style constitutional ideology in the far-eastern archipelago ?
