The nomination of presidential candidates in the United States
Pouvoirs n°14 - Élire un Président - septembre 1980 - p.41-60
In the political and legal underground surrounding the choice of presidential candidates in the United States, it is useful to try to describe the more recent significant trends and developments and in particular the effect that the Vietnam and Watergate traumas have had on the selection process. An attempt is made to determine what shifts or distortions have occured in the process (by absenteism, for example), and to analyze the reasons for them. The most significant items are : the length of the campaign, its complicated rules, the role played by the press and by money and the impediments to independent candidatures.
