Pouvoirs n°47 - L’immigration - novembre 1988 - p.5-21
A history of immigration in France would have no scientifical basis before the constitution of France as a nation-state, before the French Revolution. It would be dangerous if it could be used as a legitimation of the so called « problem of immigration » which is only the consequence of the crisis of the French national identity and of the lack of efficiency of the integration when the foreigners decide to live in France. But a reflexion about the history of the migrations in France shows that the population is the result of many foreign influences and that the French identity has been continuously modified by foreign elements which have been more or less quickly integrated. Immigration is not a status but a transitory situation and all must be done for accelerating the process of the integration of the immigrants.
