The failure of the communists in June 1981 : electoral retreat or the crisis of a hegemony ?
Pouvoirs n°20 - 1981 : la gauche au pouvoir - février 1982 - p.45-54
There are two manners to interpret the Communist Party failure of June 1981 ; either it indicates a temporary electoral retreat, which can be surmounted in time, or it is the result of a structural decline tied to the slow disintegration of the monopolies and privileges which has assured this party the powerful positions it held within French society. The object of this article is to show the strategic processes resulting in this disintegration and to estimate the resources that the party still has at its disposal in order to avoid an irreversible decline toward becoming a marginal element.
