The deterioration of the mendesist movement during the fifth Republic
Pouvoirs n°27 - Le mendésisme - novembre 1983 - p.121-130
The deterioration of the mendesist movement during the fifth Republic is due to Pierre Mendès France’s refusal of the regime, which left his supporters without a leader. Because of the bipolarisation of French political life, the mendesist movement split up into a right wing (which had its day of glory only at the beginning of Pompidou’s presidency and then disappeared) and a left wing divided into two currents : the left-wing republicans, who gathered around François Mitterrand, eventually integrated in the regime and rebuilt around themselves the non-communist left, thus abandonning Pierre Mendès France’s course ; and the modernist current which, in the second half of the 70’s, gathered around Michel Rocard but was defeated for having made the same mistakes as its inspirer.
