The american reference in the immigration debate and its ambiguities

What has happened to the fundamental distinction between the American and the French model of immigration ? Is France slowly moving toward an American emphasis on a pluralist society ? Behind the official proclamations of integral assimilation in the French tradition can one find instead social patterns of behavior and life styles which are in reality closer to the American model and which in effect translate growing tensions between the state and society. A new reading of French history, a greater pluralist discourse in terms of administrative practice, the images and references which French society produces, the existence of a new « Beur » identity with its association halfway between social and political demands, all point to an important transformation of the French context.
