The UDSR, a pivotal party

After claiming to be the instrument of the renewal of French political
life at the end of the war, in 1946 the UDSR was transformed into a
small caretaker force. Although it had opposed the 1946 constitutional
compromise it ended up by being identified with the 4th Republic. It
fully played its part as a pivotal party at the time of the Third Force.
From 1951 onward, the changes in the party system heralded the
decline of its influence. After playing the part of a buffer party and/or
a pivotal party, it was gradually restricted to the role of a secondary
force during the second and third legislatures of the 4th Republic.
