The Social Profile of French Mayors

Pouvoirs n°148 - Le Maire - janvier 2014 - p.123-138

An analysis of the data of the National Directory of Elected Officials (2008 local elections) crossed with other demographic data and the findings of several other recent surveys allows us to develop different aspects of the social profile of French mayors. It enables us to study its evolution over time and to highlights the social dynamics which make it stagnate rather than change. The most prestigious positions remain in the hands of local social and political elites, mostly composed of elderly men and which have hardly been transformed by demographic evolutions and the call for gender equality.
