The Shock Wave of Modem Sport

Modem sport is not the heir of the games of the Antiquity or the Ancien Regime, but a new social practice which developed in France during the last quarter of the XIXth century. Together with the franchise and the republican school system, it imphes the equality of every citizen as well as the triumph of merit over birth. As a show or as an activity, sport epitomizes the successive and often contradictory figures of modernity.

For the last thirty years sport has been undergoing deep changes under the combined influence of the increasing rôle of the media, the influx of money, technological innovation and the evolution of the way of life. The modernisation, extension and diversification of sport activities compétition or entertainment, team sport ot individual training have contributed at the same time to the increase of the gap between the various practices and to the tightening of the link between sport and the economie and social reality of the end of the XXth century.
