The Senate from the Third Republic to the Fifth

There are broad analogies between the Third Republic Senate and that of the Fifth Republic, resulting essentially from the links between their methods of recruitment. However, their behaviour in relation to governments that have not enjoyed their confidence, as after the elections of 1936 and 1981, has not been the same. The reason for the difference lies not only in the modem Senate’s slighter prerogatives in the elaboration of laws but also in the greater role given to partisan considerations in the election of its members by comparison with their Third Republic predecessors.
