The Right/Left Divide and the Fifth Republic: A Long Farewell Tour?
Pouvoirs n°179 - novembre 2021 - Les clivages politiques - p.29-44
Contradicting the unanimous aspiration of its founder, through its constitutional and electoral rules the Fifth Republic has led to an exacerbation of the right/left cleavage. This division has gone beyond politics (which has never been limited to this single choice) and has been a powerful factor of politicisation. However, the cleavage has progressively become the victim of the widespread mistrust of political leaders. The 2017 presidential election meant that it was possible to overcome it within the specific institutional framework of the Fifth Republic. However, the notions of right and left have not disappeared with the election of a president both “of the right and of the left”.
