The Republican Senate as Representative of Local Authorities?

Local elected officials have formed the senatorial electoral body since the Third Republic. is is the foundation of the republican Senate and what justifies its status as “representative of local authorities”. However, the history of the higher chamber since 1875 reveals the ambiguity of this expression. The principles inherited from the Revolution forbid any representation of particular and vested interests within Parliament. e designation of senators by local elected officials has thus been maintained by default, for lack of a legitimate alternative, but without setting up the local authorities “represented” in the Senate as autonomous political entities within the nation.
