The Queen and Her Prime Ministers. The Weight of Churchill’s Legacy

How many of her Prime Ministers have known ElizabethII as a child? How many have accompanied her to the racecourse to see their horses compete? How many have had the honour of a farewell dinner in the presence of the royal couple at Downing Street on the eve of their departure? How many have been granted national funerals by the Queen—who even attended the religious ceremony? The fact that to all the questions only one can be given as a response suggests how important a role Churchill, among her Prime Ministers, played alongside ElizabethII. He established with her non written conventions that his successors have largely tried to perpetuate, infringing them rarely, and always at their own expenses.
