The Public Square

The public square, which is so important in the urban space, is the site where gatherings and protests emerge. It is also the site where the dark side of the city is revealed: groups of unemployed, members of the underclass, voluntary idlers, visitors and residents. A vertical cross section of this space in Oran, the second city of Algeria, lets us see an architecture, mentalities, but also contradictions and characters that escape the typical portrayal of the Algerian militant. Because it is not the capital, it is a city that better reveals the deep country, which gave its strength to the upheaval of February 22th, 2019.
