The Presidential vote : one type of electoral conduct
Pouvoirs n°14 - Élire un Président - septembre 1980 - p.81-96
Have presidential elections benefited from a special status in the electoral conduct of the French ? Undoubtedly if one considers their purpose and what is at stake. But in a political scene dominated by frequent and intense electoral competition, the three recent presidential elections were part of a series of votes among which they were not always the most important. However the presidential election may offer the opportunity for the updating of political strengths because it is a national election for a single office, by majority vote and it necessarily changes the distribution of opinions. In this vein, the presidential election has never shown a discontinuity with the other electoral choices, but in 1981 it will bear a different meaning, depending on whether it continues the split of the 1970s or announces a new factor for the coming decade.
