The Permanence of the Right/Left Cleavage

The unexpected results of the 2017 election have shaken the traditional understanding that both citizens and political commentators had of the right/left cleavage. Until then, it was seen as a historical given that condemned citizens to place themselves on one side or the other of this political axis. The article explores the historical conditions which led to its formation and naturalization, and proposes to analyse it using a processual and configurational approach in order to avoid any essentialist conception.
