The New York City Police Department’s International Perspective
Pouvoirs n°132 - Le crime organisé - janvier 2010 - p.117-126
September 11th forever changed how the New York City Police
Department views its mission and the world around it. Beginning in
2002, the NYPD undertook far-reaching changes in order to take on
the responsibility of counterterrorism. Defending New York City from
another terrorist attack has depended most of all on the development
of a strategic, international perspective. The article looks at the various
ways the NYPD is acquiring this global perspective with a particular
emphasis on the agency’s overseas liaison program, in which police
officers are assigned to police agencies in eleven different cities outside
the United States.
