The Might of the State in France

The might of the state in France lays in its differentiation from religious institutions, economic forces and political powers. Having become a strongly institutionalized actor thanks to its army of civil servants, it has built a nation of citizens and taken charge of economic regulation, which distinguishes it clearly from the British, German and American states. Confronted with contemporary external challenges (globalisation, European construction), or domestic ones (new management, corruption, etc.), the state has vascillated, but has, however, remained true to its rationale.
