The Holy See and the Vatican City State. Past and Present

Resulting from the stubbornness of the papacy, after the end of the Papal States (1870), in establishing its spiritual independence on a symbolical temporal sovereignty, the Vatican City State, created in 1929, is a non-identiied legal object whose primary function is to house the Government of the Catholic Church, the Holy See. whereas, for more than eighty years, this mission of maintaining the independence of the Church has been properly fulilled, the existence of this pseudo-State has created new problems for the Church to which Francis, the current Pope, is now confronted.
