The Freiheitliche Partei Österreich : National-Liberal Party or Austro-Fascist Reaction ?
Pouvoirs n°87 - L’extrême droite en Europe - novembre 1998 - p.61-82
Since 1986, the FPÖ has registered a rapid electoral expansion. This
national-populist party campaigns against “foreigners” whom it accuses
of threatening the welfare of Austrians, and exploits the inequalities and
fears created by the process of modernization. The economic crisis, as
well as a real paralysis of the Austrian political system have proven to
be a fertile soil for a radical challenge to Austrian democracy. The FPÖ
has been able to attract around its program a mixed group of electors
with no established partisan loyalties, of abstentionists whose electoral
choice is strictly linked to the conjuncture, and of protest voters coming
from various democratic parties.
