The Élysée as a Military House: An Old Dimension Turned Political
Pouvoirs n°180 - janvier 2022 - L’Élysée - p.47-60
Built by an army general, the Hôtel d’Évreux was later altered by a marshal of the French Empire, then by an emperor. The decor of the palace and the history of its names keep the memory of this warrior dimension that gradually became political and military. This evolution finds an equivalent in the transformation of the “military house” as an institution of monarchical essence. It was reactivated in 1872 when the palace became once again the official residence of the president of the Republic. After 1958, the military presence at the Élysée Palace assumed a new importance, especially thanks to the creation of a personal staff of the president who was now the “head of the armed forces”.
