Pouvoirs n°22 - La RFA - septembre 1982 - p.97-118
In the Federal Republic of Germany the churches hold a privileged position, which is firmly anchored in the institutions. This is due to their exceptional position after the fall of the Third Reich. Even though the number of churchgoers has dropped, the influence of the churches in political life has remained something to be reckoned with. The Catholic church, in the name of its authority and in a way which is often on the defensive, tries to defend its « values » in society. But it often takes a stand which is too close to that of the CDU/CSU. The protestant churches are more open to pluralism and have taken part in the important debates which have concerned Germany : rearmament, the separation of Germany, the problem of peace. These churches have made the effort to exercise different forms of political teaching.
