The Constitution: Drafting and Content

The National Constituent Assembly that came out of the 23 October 2011 elections has expressed in the new Constitution the desire of the Tunisian people to break with injustice, iniquity and corruption, and to found a state based on the rule of law and the values of liberty, dignity and justice. A country attached to its identity and its culture while embracing a spirit of openness and tolerance, human values and the universal principles of the rights of man; a democratic and participatory republican regime within the framework of a civil state; a mixed political system with a government accountable to the Assembly of the representatives of the people; the guarantee of an independent judiciary; local powers based on genuine decentralisation; five constitutional bodies to watch over the implementation of these choices, to ensure their persistence and the rights of future generations. Such are the cornerstones of the new Constitution.
