The Communist Party Today

The Chinese Communist Party has only partly adjusted to the new economic
and social environment that it has created. While sticking to its
founding dogma its ideology has been renovated, its sprawling organizational
structure has been decentralized, and its leaders and cadres have
learnt to compromise with the independent intellectual and economic elites
produced by the reforms. It has, nevertheless, been weakened. Even though its membership is still increasing, its political principles and its structures
have been greatly loosened. It is mired with corruption and the lure of easy
riches just like the society it rules. One can therefore wonder whether the
Chinese Communist Party has not become a “bourgeois party”.
