The AKP and the Turkish Political Scene

The electoral victory of the Party of Justice and Development (AKP)
has surprised Europeans who have some difficulty in defining this
party and improperly present it as the party of “moderate Islamists”.
As part of the long and complex history of the Turkish multi-party
system, the AKP is basically in keeping with the attempts launched in
the 1950s to create a liberal and reformist center-right force opposed to
the enlightened statist tradition descended from Kemalism. The initial
success of the Erdogan government in the process of preparing the
country for the negotiations leading to membership of the European
Union substantiate the notion of “Muslim democrats”, even though
the political dynamic has tended to falter since the European decision
of December 2004.
