Roots of the proportionalist idea

On re-reading the participants who shared the 19th century proportionalist idea allows us to understand better the reasons which animated this vast reform movement. Three causes are distinguished. Fair representation which lies on mathematical basis, but which takes into consideration different ways of interpreting the term « minorities ». Fear on the approach of the consequences of universal suffrage. The will to shape the electoral system into a simple reproductor clearly expressed of political ideologies.
