Racisms and Anti-Racisms: How to Reconstruct Universalism
Pouvoirs n°181 - avril 2022 - Racismes et antiracismes - p.131-142
Seen as perfectly virtuous not so long ago, in the early 2020s universalism has been at the centre of polemics focusing on the best means to combat racism. From a traditional perspective, the best way to fight racism is simply to ignore origins and belongings. However, while this approach has shown its limits, the solution is not to sacrifice the universalist project by endorsing a form of essentialisation of “racial” belongings. Simply put, universalism should be seen not as a starting point but as a goal to achieve. Universalism must and can be reconstructed on the basis of the acceptance of differences, rather than on their erasure or denial.
