Productivists versus Ecologists

The question of industrial growth and its harmful consequences has been a motive of ideological disputes for some time. However, until the 1970s, it had not really produced any deep partisan cleavage. The emergence of political ecology in the following decade created, for the first time, an area of controversy over the issue of growth. For a time, ecologists monopolised the questioning of productivity. Nowadays, no political party can ignore the questions raised by the importance of climate change issues. While no party claims to be opposed to productivity growth, none is either in favour of unconditional growth.
