Primaries and our Republican Monarchy

Until recently, primaries were alien to the French political culture characterized, since 1958, by a direct relationship between the nation and its chief. They are now experiencing a growing and perhaps irre- versible success with profound effects on the political system of the Fifth Republic. As they are becoming accepted as the first natural stage of the presidential election, which they anticipate and replicate step by step, they are also a symptom of the weakening of the presidential lead- ership that they at once reflect and try to contain.
