Pierre Mendès France, in the latter years of his life, achieved near legendary status as statesman of the Left in France. An examination of his years in and out of power reveals that his relations with the parties and movements of the Left were largely characterized by their seeking to exploit his broad popularity. His own strategy for transforming the « System » often conflicted with their efforts to survive in it.
