Personal Data: The European Invention of a New World

The European Union is undoubtedly an exception in today’s world: it strongly upholds as a principle the respect of private life and the protection of personal data while, at the same time, trying to build a large digital market. It has adopted instruments without equivalent elsewhere that are used to the full by the European Union Court of Justice in its search for a delicate balance between fundamental human rights on the one hand, and freedom of expression, information and enterprise on the other.
