Although the Constitution of 1958 recognizes for the first time the existence of political parties, their role was limited to an electoral function, in accordance with the French liberal tradition. However, whereas De Gaulle used the Constitution to keep the parliamentary parties apart from the institutions, his successors acted otherwise. They allowed certain particularly well adapted political parties to the institutional mechanisms acquire an enhanced weight and this went so far as to benefit De Gaulle’s successors in various areas, including recently the financial terrain.
