Pouvoirs n°25 - Les pouvoirs africains - avril 1983 - p.51-62

This article examines the origins and changes in the power in Africa, starting with the pre-colonial roots and continuing throughout the colonization. It is based on two examples : « chiefship » and « tribalism ». The contemporary idea of the chief including the heads of State and its deviations are due as much to the colonial denaturations as to the traditional social structures ; likewise, tribalism is today the last embodiment - which was exploited and rendered degenerate during the colonial phase of the pre-colonial « ethnie feeling ». The autor’endeavours to décompose the chronological stages of this évolution.
