Nuclear weapons and the modernisation ofthe French army

De Gaulle’s decision that the French army should « go nuclear » has led to its modernisation both in a theoretical sense (it has had to work out its own strategie ideas) and in the structure of the Defence Ministry and the organisation of defence forces. This « modernisation » ofthe armed services was effected at the expense of conventional forces, and particularly of ground-based ones. There has also been a noticeable resistance to the changes brought about by the acquisition of nuclear weapons, specifically on the part of the army : this is essentially a phenomenon
of social conservatism towards a new technology that calls into question the army’s place in the military hierarchy.
