New Political Actors and New Elites

At the beginning of the 1990s Italy experienced a rather serious political
crisis which has led to radical changes in its political system. The traditional
parties have disappeared, new parties have appeared and Italy
has now become a dualist democracy. In addition, the system has not
yet succeeded in finding a new stability. The relationship between the
majority and the opposition does not yet fit the model of an advanced
democracy, based on alternation, because the actors still refuse to legitimate
each other. What do the data about le parliamentary political personnel
tell us? What kind of political class has taken power over the past
decade and, more important, what social strata are represented by the
majority led by Berlusconi?
