Minorities in Turkey

Starting from the touchy reaction of Turkey regarding the status of its
minorities, the author first stresses that the questions related to minorities
emerged within the Ottoman empire in the aftermath of the
Tanzimat reforms of 1838. Secondly, he analyzes the status of the
Armenian, Greek and Jewish minorities, the only ones recognized as
such in the Treaty of Lausanne. He then emphasizes the importance
of other linguistic or religious minorities, in particular the Alevis and
the Kurds, who do not benefit from any juridical status. Lastly, the
author suggests that the blockages existing in Turkey around these
complex issues are closely linked to the weakness of “Turkish national
construction”.
