May 1968, union representation and employers

During the last twenty years, the extension of union rights of representation within companies has been a permanent objective of the two most important French unions (the "CGT" and the "CFDT").

At the time of the strikes of May 1968, this claim occupied a front row position. With the exception of a few subtle differences it expressed the common point of view of the three federations ("CGT", "CFDT" and "FO"). This unity was not obtained without efforts. During the negotiation, the parties agreed on the need to have a law... which would be negotiated between them, before being examined and voted on by the Parliament.

The law of December 27, 1968, represents a significant step forward in labor law ; it recognized a union counter-power in the enterprise.

Two of the participants explain the story of the preliminaries, the negotiation itself, and its consequences.
