Latin America in World Geopolitics

Following the recent Summit of the Americas in Quebec, the constitution
of a vast pan-American free-trade zone may be expected by 2005.
However, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are very
diverse, and are experiencing internal tensions compounded by poverty,
social or ethnic inequalities, as well as problems arising from cultural or
religious identities. In a region converted to democratic procedures, and
within the framework of a liberal model of economic development,
Latin American countries are entering into multiple and sometimes
opposite processes of integration. NAFTA and MERCOSUR present
alternative models for the future of a sub-continent that will also be at
the vanguard of the treatment of “global” issues, such as sustainable
development or cultural identities.
