Laicism and democracy

In France, laicism has entered a third period. Its « republican » interpretation
is being harmed by the transformations of the culture, and
the limits of the school system. It is no longer possible to interpret it
exclusively in reference to the State. Its necessary aggiornamento
requires a solution, on the one hand, to the problem of social exclusion
and to the school crisis, on the other, to the challenge the growth of
cultural differences represent for democracy.
