“Known to the Police”

Initially created in 1978 to protect French citizens from potential risks concerning the use of police or administrative records, the National Commission for Data Protection (cnil) has tried, since the middle of the 1990s, to oversee the administrative inquiry on morality based on the consultation of the records of defendants in a judiciary inquiry. In vain. So much so that the ministry of Interior does not know how many (six, nine, twelve million?) people are the object of police records, and even less how many have their data wrongfully recorded.
