Italian communism faces a dead-end

After a long uninterrupted period of electoral and political growth, it seems that the Italian Communist party is faced with an identity crisis. The decision to make the historical compromise lead to a serious set back and also has changed the make-up and the ideology of the party. The widening of its base of support and the ideological modifications have sparked a social-democratic current to which the majority of the Italian Communist Party has only been able to reply by utilizing a « neo-workerism » philosophy which casts a shadow on the gains of the 1970’s. We are witnessing a lack of strategic perspective which has as a consequence giving free rein to the Socialist Party attack.
