Islamic movements

Since the outset of the Iranian revolution, researchers have tried to assess the influence of external religious revivalist movements on Northern African Islam. In Algeria, the culture and attitudes of the urban youth which is excluded from the process of modernisation offer an important field for research. They seem to carry forward an evolution which has been observed in Tunisia since the beginning ofthe eighties. But the Islamic Front of Salvation went much further in a very short period of time. Despite its rather recent (1989) legal existence, it has won the absolute majority of the votes in two elections. Outlawing it cannot suppress the mass movement and can only postpone compromises which seem inevitable.
